We are students of the Ecology and Environmental Protection at the Faculty of Science, Palacký University Olomouc. We have been interested in the topic of using mining sites for nature conservation for several years. For us, this competition means a unique opportunity how to help to preserve what nature has already created on the site and possibly support the natural processes even further.

South Moravian region including Znojmo district, where the Tasovice sand pit is located, has been dramatically transformed by people who originally settled here thousands of years ago. For a long time, they lived in harmony with the nature and their impact on the landscape was predominantly positive – for example, they contributed to the preservation of nowadays highly valued steppe sites. However, within the last 100 years, the human influence on local nature has become unbearable – many of the last fragments of forest, steppe and wetland have been destroyed and today they are used for intensive agricultural production. These days, many plant and animal species, once quite common, are on the brink of extinction.

In the Tasovice sand pit the sand is being mined using the dry way where the ground water level is not reached so there are unsuitable conditions for the formation of marshes. On the other hand, the walls of the sand pit, where sand martin nests, are very valuable. Already mined parts of the sand pit are already reclaimed for agricultural production (bottom of the sand pit) and the slopes on the edge of the sand pit have been left to spontaneous succession.

The first part of our project will focus on the biological survey of the taxonomic groups, which can be used for indication – arachnida, orthoptera, lepidoptera and birds. We will conduct a botanical survey using vegetation plots and we will make an inventory. We will visit several nearby sides with already developed steppe vegetation and evaluate their potential for introducing local species to the Tasovice sand pit and suitability for potential acquisition of the seeds to support the development of new communities in the Tasovice sand pit.

Based on this research we will propose a detailed project for reclamation of the parts which are currently being mined and if need be, we will recommend a suitable management of the parts which have already been reclaimed. The measures should not interfere with the operation of the sand pit and their implementation should be as inexpensive as possible. Our priority is to maintain the existing occurrence of rare sand-bound species typical for nutrient-poor habitats and if possible, to create conditions for further formation of more interesting communities.

Jsme studenti Přírodovědecké fakulty Univerzity Palackého v Olomouci, oboru Ochrana a tvorba životního prostředí.

V tasovické pískovně se těží písek suchou cestou a není zde možnost dosáhnout hladiny spodní vody a tím dát jednoduše vzniknout mokřadům.
