The main question in this project is: What is the best restoration method, i.e. spontaneous succession, directed succession or technical reclamation, for the biodiversity conservation (including endangered species) in the sand pits?

In the first phase of the project, large field survey will be carried out in the already reclaimed areas within the Cep II sand pit. The botanical survey will be focused on the vascular plants and the phytosociological relevés will be situated on the sites differed in age and moisture. Zoological survey will be focused on major insect groups for which such habitats are essential. In the second phase, species diversity and present endangered vascular plants and groups of insect typical of such habitats (Beetles, Hymenoptera, Orthoptera) will be compared in already restored areas with the use of three restoration methods (spontaneous succession, directed succession on Klara's island and technical reclamation) within the Cep II sand pit. In the third phase, restoration scheme will be created for southwestern part of the Cep II mining area that will be restored in the close future (slopes, coast line).

Finally we propose the experiment, results of which would contribute to more exactly planned restoration in other mining localities. For the very first time, the experiment would clearly demonstrate which type of restoration is the best for the biodiversity conservation in the sand pits and also save the money (near-natural restoration is cheaper than reclamation).

V rámci návrhu ve třetí fázi projektu navrhneme experiment, jehož výsledky by v budoucnu mohly posloužit k vyššímu zastoupení a přesnějšímu zacílení přírodě blízké obnovy v dalších těžebnách.
