Quarries after the immediate end of mining can offer a very interesting space for various plant species that are suitable for stress habitats and some rare animals can be attached to them. Invasive and expansive species do not have to be in such habitats at all or only on days where more favorable conditions prevail. However, if inappropriate interventions are made during reclamation, these species may become dominant. And we also encounter this situation in the case of the Olšany quarry, where the shrub reed (Calamagrostis epigejos) occupied a majority representation in the herb sphere. The essence of our project is to parasitize the shrub cane (C. Epigejos) with the cockerel (R. alectorolophus).
International jury visited the quarry
Last Tuesday we visited the quarry again, but we were not alone, we were joined by international judge Carolyn Jewell, Mr Tichý and Mrs Botková.

Why is it (not) growning?
The biggest advantage for us is that the quarry is an island in the otherwise acidic sea of the surrounding soil. Which makes it worse by spreading to the surrounding vegetation, but if it weren't for that, we wouldn't have to set up the experiments at all, because cocklebur wouldn't grow in our quarry. Fortunately, this is not the case, so now I can happily analyse how our cockle develops and yields.

Proč nám to (ne)roste?
Vlastně to největší štěstí pro nás je, že lom je bazickým ostrovem v jinak acidickém moři okolní půdy. Což sice zhoršuje šířením okolnímu rostlinstvu, ale pokud by to tak nebylo, nemuseli bychom pokusy vůbec zakládat, protože kokrhel by nám v lomu prostě nerostl. Bohudík to tak není, takže já teď můžu vesele rozebírat, jak nám kokrhel roste a plodí.
